The backstory of Brad Pitt's character Sonny Hayes in "F1: The Movie" is based on real racer Martin Donnelly's career-ending 1990 crash. Aging former Formula One (F1) prodigy Sonny Hayes has spent the last 30 years living as a racer-for-hire, following a career-ending crash at the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix that has left him burdened by the failure to live up to his potential. Pitt's character, Sonny Hayes , is not a real-life F1 racer, nor is his protégé Joshua "Noah" Pearce. Like other great fictional sports movies, F1 will feature real-world elements of a legitimate international sports league but will not be centered around a historical figure or events. Brad Pitt plays the charming and talented racer, Sonny Hayes , in F1: The Movie, and parts of his racing journey are based on real Formula 1 events.
