Purines and pyrimidines are heterocyclic aromatic compounds, which, along with sugar and phosphate groups, form the important components of nucleotides. There are many naturally occurring purines. They include the nucleotide bases adenine and guanine. In DNA, these bases form hydrogen bonds with their complementary pyrimidines, thymine and cytosine, respectively. This is called complementary base pairing. In RNA, the complement of adenine is uracil instead of thymine. Learn how a low-purine diet can help reduce uric acid levels and prevent gout and kidney stones. Find out which foods are high in purines and which ones may lower uric acid in your body.
