India , officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area; the most populous country since 2023; and, since its independence in 1947, the world's most populous democracy. India is now the most populous country in the world, with an estimated population of 1.4 billion people (in 2024). The country is subdivided into 29 states and seven Union Territories. With an area of 3,287,263 km², India is the 7th largest country in the world, about one-third the size of the USA. India is a country that occupies the greater part of South Asia. It is a constitutional republic that represents a highly diverse population consisting of thousands of ethnic groups. It is made up of eight union territories and 28 states, and its capital is New Delhi.
