Su Li-Zhen moves in next door with her husband the same day. The two have no real relationship – they pass each other on the stairway – until both suddenly grasp that their spouses are having an affair together. With their spouses away, they spend time together as friends, until they realize their spouses are having an affair and do the same. A co-production between Hong Kong and France, the film follows a man (Tony Leung) and a woman (Maggie Cheung) in 1962 who discover that their spouses are having an affair. As they spend time together, they gradually develop feelings for one another.
