Justice Gavai sworn in as 52nd Chief Justice of India, first Buddhist CJI, known for bold decisions and commitment to Constitution. CJI Gavai has taken inspiration from the teachings of Dr BR Ambedkar and the principles of the Constitution. “It is solely due to Dr B R Ambedkar’s efforts that someone like me, who studied in a semi-slum area at a municipal school, could attain this position,” he said in a speech in April 2024, ending with a chant of “Jai Bhim”. Justice Gavai will serve as the CJI until his retirement on November 23, 2025. As he dons the mantle of CJI, all eyes will be on him — not just for the judgments he delivers, but for the legacy he shapes. Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai became the 52nd Chief Justice of India on 14th May 2025. He is an experienced judge who has worked in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He is the first Chief Justice from the Buddhist community and the second Dalit to hold this position.
