Immunology is the study of the immune system that consists of several types of immunity such as cell-mediated immunity and humoral immunity, diseases related to the immune system, and the physiological and biological functioning of the immune system. Immunology is a relatively new science. Its origin is usually attributed to Edward Jenner (Fig. 1.1), who discovered in 1796 that cowpox, or vaccinia, induced protection against human smallpox, an often fatal disease.
